The reason why the Axolotl is Extinct was a man made problem; Water Pollution (Human Waste) found in the Water. Making the water safe and clean could have been done but the Mexican Government chose to do nothing to save the Axolotl For more information Click Here  The Axolotl is also known as: Mexican Water Dragon.

How do I know that information on this website is correct?
We at Buy-Axolotls.com have been breeding Water Dragons since 2001 and that is the only animal that we breed. The information that we state on this website is what we do and have been doing since 2001. We have tested everything that we recommend to you on this website.  For all you Nay Sayers, do the test yourself. You will see I am right.

If you do water changes the 1 per week you will be removing 90% of the Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate in your aquarium. If you do not do weekly water changes then the levels of Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate in your aquarium will reach levels that will kill your Water Dragon. So it very important that you do water changes 1 per week. Doing water changes each week will greatly extend the life of your Water Dragons.

How can I avoid health problems with my Water Dragon (Axolotl)?

Glossary of Breeding Terms

Outbreeding – Is the mating of unrelated individuals, which often produces more vigorous offspring than the parents are in terms of growth, survival, and fertility

Inbreeding – Is the mating of Brother to Sister

Line Breeding – Is the mating of Uncle to Nice or Aunt to Nephew

Avoid Water Dragons (Axolotls) with genetic problems. These problems happen when a Breeder is Inbreed or Linebreed. Water Dragon with genetic problems will also have heath problems for their entire life. You do not want to be on this emotional roller coaster ride. If the Breeder doesn’t state that the Water Dragon is Outbreed then you are probably buying a Water Dragon that has been Inbreed or Linebreed. So ask the question who are the parents? If they tell you that both parents are the same color then the breeder is probably selling you a Inbreed or Linebreed Water Dragon. Buying a improperly breed Water Dragon with genetic problems; will only cause your Water Dragon a life time of heath problems.

Next look to see if the breeder selling a baby? If the Water Dragon is under 3 inches long then you are buying a baby. Most breeder will not state the size of the Water Dragon and it would be legal for them to ship you an egg. Also baby Water Dragon need special care and are very likely to die because pet owners do not have the skills of a Breeder who knows how to take special care for babies.

Next is that; Water Dragons like cold clean water. So if you keep the water quality cold and clean you should be able to avoid health problems.

Do not to over feed your Water Dragon. Over feeding your Water Dragon will lead to health problems also over feeding contaminates the water from the uneaten food and waste. It is better to under feed that over feed.

At Buy-Axolotls.com we do not recommend that you use Sand or Gravel in your tank. Your Water Dragon (Axolotls) will eat the Sand or Gravel and by doing so will endanger your Water Dragon’s life. If you eat a cup of Sand or Gravel every day, do you think you would have a Long Life? Probably not. Click Here – To See How to Make a Safe Axolotl Tank

If you follow these simple steps you will buy a healthy Water Dragon that will live up to 15 years.

Is a Water Dragon (axolotl) disease-prone?
Water Dragons are very hardy animals, however they are prone to a bacterial and fungal problem if you do not do change the water weekly or if the water temperature is too high you will be putting your Water Dragon at risk for these problems. I also recommend that you keep the chlorine in the water as a preventative to kill any bacterial and fungal problem that may be on your Water Dragon or in your tank.

How do I know if the web site is giving me the proper health care instructions?
If the web site has only one solution for any health problem, i.e. a “Salt Bath” then you are not getting proper health care instructions on that Web Site. There are a lot of  Web Sites that think a Water Dragon is a fish. Water Dragons are not a fish. Water Dragons are amphibian (Salamander). A Water Dragons have lungs like we do and are air breathers, unlike fish that has gills and would breathe the water. If your on a Web Site that thinks that Water Dragons is a fish then you will get wrong health care instructions. I get a big laugh when I see some one ask “What are your water parameters?”.

Also if a Web Site states the wrong temperature range of 75 degrees.  75 degrees is too hot and will kill your Water Dragon (Axolotl). Do not trust any Web Site that states a wrong temperature range.

What should I do when I am aware of a health problem with my Water Dragon?
The first thing to do is remove your Water Dragon from your tank. Because the cause of the health problem may be coming from inside of your tank, by separating the Water Dragon from your tank gives you time to figure out what may be wrong inside your tank; for example your temperatures too high, or you need to do an emergency water change, or need to remove sand, gravel, plants and any items that might be painted with lead paint. When something like this happens put the Water Dragon in a plastic shoe box, that you can buy at any store. Then fill the plastic shoe box it with cold tap water and put the water level 1 inch above the Water Dragons head.  You can put a Water Dragon in the refrigerator. The reason for this is that Water dragons are cold-blooded they will not die from the cold. By putting it in the refrigerator what happens is that their metabolism will slow down. This gives you More Time to find out what is wrong and correct it. Feed live Red Wigglers Worms you can buy at Walmart.

What causes a Water Dragon (Axolotl) to get sick?

Bloat
This problem usually is happens when Water Dragon eat sand or gravel. Sand and Gravel is the number one killer of Water Dragons because they will eat it and they will die from eating it. The Sand and Gravel will cause a blockage in the digestive tract and there is nothing you can do to save its life and it is a very painful way to die. If you use sand or gravel in your aquarium, I highly recommend that you that you remove all out sand or gravel out from your aquarium immediately. You are putting the life of your Water Dragon at risk. Use Slate; look at How to make a Safe Axolotl aquarium on this web site. This kind of blockage is not curable. However if you have a food blockage Bloat is curable and is listed below.

My Water Dragon has Bloat, What Should I do? (Food Bloat Cure)
On June 18, 2012 Buy-Axolotls.com made an important medical breakthrough for the treatment for Axolotl Bloat. Axolotl Bloat is the number one causes of death for a Axolotl. We at Buy-Axolotls.com thought that this medical breakthrough for the treatment for Axolotl for Bloat was too important not to share because of the Axolotl lives it will save. Sand and Gravel is the number one killer of Water Dragons (Axolotls) because they will eat it and they will die from eating it. If you have Sand or Gravel at the bottom of your aquarium this Food Bloat Cure will not work. There is no medicine that can dissolve Sand or Gravel and keep your Water Dragon alive. It is a very painful way to die.  If you have Sand or Gravel in your aquarium Take It Out Now. If your Water Dragon struggle to get to the bottom of the tank then you need to treat for Food Bloat. Bloat is a medical condition in which the stomach becomes overstretched by excessive gas content. The first sign of ‘bloat’ is loss of appetite which is then followed by swelling of the abdomen. Do not feed Water Dragon for two week because the food will only make the problem worst. Put your Water Dragon in a plastic shoe box that you can buy at the Dollar Store. Then put the water level just over its head so you Water Dragon does not struggle to breath and reach the bottom for food when you start feeding your Water Dragon again. Use cold water to do your water changes and do them every day and add new medicine every day.  You can use tap water for your water changes but let the water run so that it gets as cold as possible. Do not use any filters or any activated charcoal filters during these treatments. You can use laxative for humans. You can buy ClearLax at Sam’s Club and Walmart. Do Not Buy Flavor Laxative. The Canadian version is Restoralax or Laxaday. If the laxative is a solid you will need to liquefy the laxative. For a Water Dragons under 6 inches long use 1 teaspoon and put the water 1 inch above the Water Dragon head in a 2 1/2 gallon sick tank. For a Water Dragons over 6 inches long use 2 teaspoons and put the water 1 inch above the Water Dragon head in a in a 2 1/2 gallon sick tank. Change 100% of the water every day and add new laxative every day until you Water Dragon is cured. If after 1 week your Water Dragon is not getting better add an additional laxative. You should see improvement after one week. When your Water Dragon is at the bottom of the aquarium then you can put him/her back into your aquarium. It is better to under feed than over feed. Copyright © 2012 by Philip Vena

Genetic Problems
When a Water Dragon are bred brother to sister, you can expect all kinds of health problems due to the inbreeding of the Water Dragon. Usually these Water Dragons have a very short life with lots of health problems.

When I purchased my Water Dragon the Gill’s are missing. What is wrong and will the gills grow back?
The reason why your Water Dragon Gills are missing is because the breeder is breeding Brother to Sister. Your Water Dragon DNA is permanently damaged and the Gills will not grow back. I also see this with Axolotls missing toes and web feet.

Stress
When you see a Water Dragon’s tail starts to curling this is the first sign of stress. This problem is usually caused by a strong current (fast moving water) in your aquarium.

My Water Dragon has a tail that is curled, what should I do?

1)   Water Dragons do not like water flow in your aquarium. That is why we do not recommend that you have filters in your aquarium.

2)   Check the temperature of your tank and make sure that it’s below 72°.

3) Check water quality may be the problem, do water change as soon as possible.

I have noticed my Water Dragon (axolotl) is floating around on top of the tank. Is there a problem?

Below is a picture of a Axolotl bite mark.

If you see this, you must remove your Axolotl from the tank until the bite wound is healed. Put your Axolotl in a 2 1/2 gallon sick tank and do 100% water changes every day.

Parasites
If you feed live food like worms and minnows to Water Dragon that are from the wild or from your garden then they may contain parasites. These parasites will be transferred to your Water Dragon when they eat this food. If you will not eat live food then it probably has parasites. The cure is listed below.

My Axolotl will not eat.
Try feeding live Red Wiggler Worms that you can buy at Walmart in the fishing department. If your Water Dragon still will not eat live food, then the most common reason why Axolotls will not eating is because the levels of ammonia, nitrates and nitrites levels in your tank are too high. You need to do a 90% water change to lower the levels of ammonia, nitrates and nitrites.

Next most common reason Axolotls stop eating is that somehow chemicals got into the tank. Either by hand cream, Windex, or any other aerosol cleaning fluid. You need to clean the tank with a new plastic scouring pad to remove any chemicals film that may be on the sides of the tank.

PraziPro: flukes, tapeworm, flatworm, and internal parasites. Use in freshwater or marine aquariums

Metro+: treatment for hole-in-the-head and lateral line diseases General Cure: Hole-in-the-head disease and gill and skin flukes

Anchor Worm Treatment: Anchor worms can be treated with potassium permanganate in the community tank (will color the water) or by bathing sick fish in a potassium permanganate solution (10mg per liter) for 20-30 min.

Put your Water Dragon in a sick tank and start treatment as stated on the package. You should see positive results in about 4 weeks.

I have a Leech on my Water Dragon, what should I do to get it off?
When you buy Live Black Worms you will also get Live Leeches. Leeches are parasite that are easy to spotted with the naked eye. Leeches are worms that often appear hearth shaped as they curle themselves toward the body of the Water Dragon. Leeches attached themselves onto the body, legs or gills. It might be tempting to get a pair of pliers and manually remove the leeches from the Water Dragon but you should never do that. This is because the leeches borrow themselves into the surface of the Water Dragon and if you forcibly removing them can cause serious damage to the Water Dragon. You should prepare a salt bath instead for the Water Dragon. Put the Water Dragon in a 2.5% salt solution for 15 minutes. This will most likely cause the leech to release its grip on the Water Dragon and if it doesn’t, Increase the amount of salt until the Leech removes itself. You can also treat your aquarium by using 0.25 mg Trichlorofon for every litre water in your aquarium.

You can also kill all the Leeches it the shipping bag by putting 25 drops of Methylene Blue in the water. The water level in the bag should be between ½” to 1″ of water above the Black Worms. Put in the refrigerator for two days. After 2 days you can see all the leeches dead. If not increase the amount of drops of Methylene Blue.

Bacterial and Fungal Problems
These problems are usually caused because the aquarium temperature is too high and or poor water quality (not doing water changes every week). Cure is listed below.

Read the medicine label, it must state that it is safe for Amphibians. If does not state this, do not use it. Only Use The Correct  Amount; Using Too Much Medicine Will Kill Your Axolotl.

What is a safe Antibiotic for Axolotls?
Here is a list of Antibiotics that are safe for Axolotls; Kanamycin (kanacyn), Nitrofurazone (nitrofura, Furacyn), Triple Sulfa (tri-sulfa), Furan-2, Myxazin, All Are Broad-Spectrum Amphibian Antibiotics sold at Tropical Fish Stores. Please read and use only the correct doses.

(For USA) My Water Dragon (Axolotl) has a Fungus (A White Milky Substance) what should I do?
The cause of this Fungus is due to poor water quality and or the water temperature is too high.Water Dragons are prone to bacterial and fungus infections.

You need to have Fungus Medicine nearby because a Fungus can kill your Water Dragon in less than 2 days. First put you Water Dragon in a Sick Tank a plastic shoe box that you can buy at the dollar store. Then put the water level 1 inch above your Water Dragon head. Now draw a line where that water level is. Now pour the water in a measuring cup to find out how much water you need to treat. You need put the tank in the Refrigerator as soon as possible because this will slow down your Water Dragon’s metabolism and give more time to treat the fungus infection. You need to have a 2nd container that will hold the same amount of water and put that in the Refrigerator so when you do water change tomorrow  it will be at the same temperature (this way your Water Dragon will not be going up and down in temperature; going up and down in temperature will stress out your Water Dragon).

The best medication for a fungus infection the manufacturer is API and the product name is Pimafix you can buy this at your local Tropical Fish Store, PetSmart, or Petco. You can use Kanaplex; but you can only buy this on the Internet. The next best medicine is to buy Jungle Fungus Eliminator or Clear, these can be purchased at your local PetSmart, Petco or your local tropical fish store. I do not recommend that you use Maracyn 1 and 2 because of the over use and many infections do not respond to this medicine. Only use the amount that is stated on the medicine label that you are using. If you over medicate your Water Dragon it will Die. You need to do a 100% water change each day and add new medicine each day and put a Red Wiggler worm in with your Water Dragon as a source for food during your treatment. Add new medicine every day with your water change until your Water Dragon starts to eating the Red Wiggler worm. Now that your Water Dragon is eating again it is safe to take him out of the refrigerator. Before putting back in your aquarium you need to match the temperature of the water that is in the refrigerator; use ice to bring down your aquarium temperature down to match the refrigerator temperature. You can buy live Red Wiggler Worms at Walmart in fishing department to feed during this process.

Only for Central America – Chytrid (Chytridiomycosis) A White Milky Substance: Fungus Cure
You need to have Fungus Medicine nearby because this Fungus can kill your Water Dragon in less than 2 days. You need put the Water Dragon in a plastic shoe box that you can buy at the dollar store. Then put the water level 1 inch above your Water Dragon head. Now draw a line where that water level is. Put the tank in the Refrigerator because this will slow down your Water Dragon’s metabolism and give more time to treat the fungus infection.

Axolotls can be treated by putting 0.01% of itraconazole (Generic Sporanox) Now take your Water Dragon out of the sick tank and put him in a small container for their bath. The Bath water should contain 0.01% of itraconazole (Generic Sporanox) in it. Give your Water Dragon a 10 minutes bath for 10 days. Do not use any filters or any activated charcoal filters during these treatments. This treatment and quarantine procedures is successful cure for the Chytrid (Chytridiomycosis) disease. If you over medicate your Water Dragon will Die. Do this until all the fungus is gone and your Water Dragon starts to eat. Feed only live Red Worms or live Black Worms during this process.

Red Leg Disease (Aeromonas hydrophila)
Hydrophila is associated with diseases mainly found in freshwater fish and amphibians, because these organisms live in aquatic environments. It is linked to a disease found in frogs called red leg, which causes internal, sometimes fatal hemorrhaging. When infected with Hydrophila, Axolotls develop ulcers, tail rot, fin rot, andhemorrhagic septicemia. Hemorrhagic septicaemia causes lesions that lead to scale shedding, hemorrhages in the gills and anal area, ulcers, exophthalmia, and abdominal swelling.

Treatment
Hydrophila can be eliminated using a 1% sodium hypochlorite solution or 2% calcium hypochlorite solution.

Antibiotics such as chloramphenicol, florenicol, tetracycline, sulfonamide, nitrofuran derivatives, and pyrodinecarboxylic acids are used to eliminate and control the infection of Hydrophila.

Why Do I See Excess Fluid Under The Axolotl’s Skin? – Chlamydiosis Treatment
Chlamydiosis is a serious infection that can lead to death. Infected Axolotls can die suddenly or show signs of swelling due to excess fluid under the Axolotl’s skin. An examination by a veterinarian may show enlargement of the liver and inflammation within the liver, spleen, kidney, and other organs. Chlamydiosis may be accompanied by other bacterial infections, which must also be treated. Antibiotics are often prescribed to treat chlamydial infection.

How Do I Clean My Aquarium After I Had A Fungus or Bacteria Problem?
At Buy-Axolotls.com we don’t recommend that you use bleach to clean your aquarium after you had a Fungus or Bacteria problem. The best way to kill the Fungus or Bacteria is to go to your local Pool Store and buy a gallon of Pool Shock (liquid chlorine). Take out any Water Dragons and any other living creature out of your aquarium before you add Pool Shock (liquid chlorine) to your aquarium. Pool Shock will kill all living creature in your aquarium.

First fill your aquarium almost to the top. Then add 2 cups of liquid Pool Shock for a 10 gallon aquarium and stir the Pool Sock in the aquarium. After 24 hours drain your aquarium and rinse it a few times with tap water before setting it up. The chlorine will turn into a gas in 24 hours and will be out of your aquarium. This an easy and safe way to kill any Fungus or Bacteria that is in your aquarium.

Never use soap or any other solvents in your aquarium.

Cannibalistic Problems
These problems are due to other Water Dragons during the cannibalistic stage (Water Dragons under 6 inches long). If they are not separated during this cannibalistic stage they will eat the limbs of their Tank Mates. Go to the following page: http://www.buy-axolotls.com/water-dragon-axolotl-are-in-the-cannibalistic-stage-until-they-are-6-inches-long/

Poor Water Condition Problems
If you do not 90% water change every 7 days the level of Ammonia, Nitrite, & Nitrate will build to dangerous levels and kill your Water Dragon. Also aquarium filters are notorious for not telling you when they stop working which will raise the level of Ammonia, Nitrite, & Nitrate to dangerous levels and kill your Water Dragon. This is why I recommend water change is not aquarium filters.

Chemicals – Possible causes of chemicals in your tank

Can Mosquito Repellent, Sun Tan Lotion and Hand Creams kill my Water Dragon?
Yes, if you use any Mosquito Repellent, Sun Tan Lotion and All Hand Creams; Scented, Medicated and Sanitizer. These Mosquito Repellent, Sun Tan Lotion, Hand Creams and Soaps are dangerous and will kill your Water Dragon. You need to wash them off before putting your hands inside your aquarium. When washing your hands please makes sure that you rinse all the soap off your hands too. Also do not use a or use a dirty towel to clean inside of your tank, use only clean paper towels.

Please do not Aerosol Cans and Spray Cleaner!
This is an easy way to kill your Water Dragons because these products produce a deadly mist that will travel in the air and into your Water Dragon Aquarium. I get email asking why all my Water Dragons died at the same time? This happens when chemicals get into your tank.  If you need to use these cleaners we recommend that you spray into a closed rag so that you do not create a mist.

Early detection of chemicals in your tank.
The best way to detect chemicals in your tank is to put small feeder fish in your tank. They will be the first to die should you have any chemicals in your tank. They are like canaries in a coal mine. You can buy small feeder fish at PetSmart and Petco for about $.20 cents each. If your Axolotl dies for no apparent reason, to if chemicals was the cause of your Axolotl’s death then buy feeder fish at PetSmart and Petco for about $.20 cents each. If the Feeder fish all die then chemicals are in the tank.

My Axolotl is dead. Can you tell me what happen?
More often than not, when an Axolotl die for “No Reason” the cause is probably chemicals. It can be from Aerosol Window Cleaner, Mosquito Repellent, Sun Tan Lotion and All Hand Creams; Scented, Medicated and Sanitizer. These repellent, lotion, creams and soaps are dangerous and will kill your Axolotl. When washing your hands makes sure that you rinse all the soap off your hands too.

You need to do a 90% water change every 7 days. By not doing a weekly water change every 7 days the Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate in your aquarium will reach deadly levels and kill your Axolotl.

Also you need to make sure that the 5 gallon bucket is free of any soap and cleaners. Make sure that your 5 gallon bucket is NEW and rinsed out with tap water before use.  Do not use a towels to clean inside of your tank, only use clean paper towels.

My Water Dragon Gill’s have shrunk or have changed to a light color. What is wrong and will the gills grow back?
80% of the time the reason why the gills on your Axolotl have shrunk or changed color is because the water has dangerously high levels of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. It is because you did not do a 90% water change one per week. 20% of the time it’s because the Axolotl has health issues or it has come in contact with chemicals. The gill sets should grow back if the problem is corrected. However the older the Axolotl is, the more time it will take for the gills to grow back.

My water is cloudy what should I do?
The water is cloudy because you are feeding your Water Dragon (axolotl) too much food. Do a 90% water change as soon as possible.Your Water Dragon will live longer if you keep the water as clean as possible. It is better to feed too little than too much. Too much food will cause health problems. NEVER USE; Aquarium Clear, Clear Water and Water Clarifier these chemicals will Kill Your Water Dragon. Doing a 90% water change is the safest way to eliminate cloudy water.

How do I re-slime my Water Dragon?
If need to handle your Water Dragon we recommend that you handle your Water Dragon over the aquarium. Should it slip out of your hands your Water Dragon will fall in to the Water not on the floor. After you handle your Water Dragon you will need to replace its slime coat that was taken off when you used your hands. The best way to this is to put your Water Dragon in a clear plastic bag that matches the length of the Water Dragon. Place your Water Dragon in the bag and add Slime Coat (you can buy this at any tropical fish store). With out touching your Water Dragon put the bag in the aquarium and fill the bag with water, then turn the bag upside down and release him into the tank.

Why Won’t My Water Dragon Eat?
A vast majority of the time it is because you are not doing a 90% water change one per week. If you do not do weekly water changes then the levels of Ammonia and Nitrite in your aquarium will reach levels that will kill your Water Dragon. The first sign of this is that your Water Dragon will stop eating. So it very important that you do water changes 1 per week.Doing water changes each week will greatly extend the life of your Water Dragons. Also feed live Red Worms that you can buy at Walmart in their Fishing Department. An Axolotl can live up to 4 weeks with out eating.

If your Water Dragon still will not eat live food, then your Water Dragon probably has internal parasites and you need to go to your local Tropical Fish store and buy Parasite Guard cost is about $4.00. Parasite Guard is a fast dissolving, per-measured fizz tablets that you drop into your 2 ½ Gallon Sick Tank. You will need to buy a Tablet Cutter at your local Drug Store. Cut the tablet in to ¼. 1 tablet treats 10 gallons of water. Once you have the tablet in to ¼ then drop it in your 2 ½ Gallon Sick Tank. The fizzing action assures that you know it’s working, immediately dispersing its ingredients throughout your 2 ½ Gallon Sick Tank. Parasite Guard removes external and internal parasites from your Water Dragon, including protozoans, flukes, lice, anchor worms and flagellates such as hexamita or spironucleus which cause hole-in-the-head disease. Harmful to snails and crustaceans. Each tablet treats 10 gallons of water. Put your Water Dragon in a sick tank and start treatment as stated on the package. You should see positive results in about 4 weeks. Also feed live Red Worms that you can buy at Walmart in their Fishing Department.

Is it safe to put a Water Dragon in the refrigerator?
Yes it is safe and I highly recommend using your refrigerator when you are treating a fast-acting fungus disease. A fungus disease will kill a Water Dragon in as quickly as two days. By putting your Water Dragon in your refrigerator you are slowing down its metabolism. By doing so it gives you more time to treat the fungus disease. You’ll need a plastic shoe box that you can buy at any Dollar Store also I recommend that you put live red wiggler worms (you can buy at Wal-Mart in the Fishing Area) in with your sick Water Dragon so that it has access to food. Put the water level 1/4 inch above your Water Dragon’s head so it is easy for him to get a breath of air. You need to do water changes every day and put new medicine in every day. I recommend that you keep in your refrigerator a same amount of water that you have in the plastic shoe box, so that when you doing the water change it will be the water will be at the same temperature as the water in the plastic shoe box. By doing it this way there will be no temperature change to your Water Dragon. You can use a measure cup to find out the amount of water that you have in the plastic shoe box this way you will know the exact amount of water do you have in the plastic shoe box and the proper amount of medicine is needed to treat that amount of water.

Can I hold my Axolotl?
I don’t recommend that you hold your axolotl. First of all your axolotl has a protective slime coat and by holding him you would remove some of that protection. Also axolotl’s protect themselves by doing a tail flip that turns the axolotl 90° in less than a second, if your axolotl should accidentally fall out of your hand he would probably die. The reason for this is that the skeleton of the axolotl is very delicate because he spends his entire life in water. So any fall would probably kill your axolotl. However if you want to hold your Water Dragon we would only recommend that you hold him above your aquarium. If you Water Dragon slips out of your hands then it will fall into the water not the floor. Also you will need to re-slime him. The best way to do this is to put some Slime Coat (you can buy at any tropical fish store) in a plastic bag that is as long and your Water Dragon. Then put your Water Dragon in the plastic bag and add some more Slime Coat. Then turn the  over and release him back in the aquarium.

My aquarium water has turned a red, is this normal?
No this not normal. The red colored is either coming the blood worms or from your Water Dragon. Do a 90% water change and do not feed any blood worms for 24 hours. If your water turns red, then there is a health problem with your Water Dragon. Put you Water Dragon in a plastic shoe box you can buy at the Dollar Store and into your refrigerator as soon as possible.

I recommend that you put live red wiggler worms (you can buy at Wal-Mart in the Fishing Area) in with your sick Water Dragon so that it has access to food. My axolotl is not moving, is this normal?
A Water Dragon (Axolotl) will typically spend most of their time relatively motionless on the bottom of the tank. If you put live food in with your Water Dragon, like a live Rosy Minnow or live Red Wiggle worms, then their predator instinct will take over and your Water Dragon will try to find a way to get some lunch. Water Dragons will try to catch live fish is by ambushing it, rather than chase it. We at Buy-Axolotls.com we feed our “Water Dragons floating pellets” rather than sinking pellets. Because Water Dragons have their eyes on top of their head, they are always searching above for possible food opportunities. When you do see your Water Dragon move it is usually because they need to get a gulp of air. Water Dragons have lungs like us and need to come to the surface of the water in order to breathe.  Water Dragon also flicks their gills from time to time.

My Water Dragon just spit up some food, is this a Medical Problem?
No it is not a medical problem and nothing to worry about, just normal behavior for a Water Dragon.

What do you do when a Water Dragon has injured to its leg?
The first thing you need to know about Water Dragons (axolotl) is that if a Water Dragon is cannibalistic; this is learned and remembered behavior and that Water Dragon will be cannibalistic for the rest of its life. (This is why at Buy Axolotls.com we separate all our Water Dragons at birth so that they never learn this cannibalistic behavior) You need to remove the cannibalistic Water Dragon from your tank so that it will not have contact with any other Water Dragons. Otherwise more Water Dragons will be damaged by the cannibalistic one.

Put your Water Dragon in a 2 1/2 gallon sick tank. Use cold tap water only, Wait a minute or two so that it gets as cool as possible. Water temperature must be below 72° degrees. Put the water at level 1 inch above its head. Then buy some antibacterial medicine at your local Tropical Fish store and put only the amount stated on the package. If you put in too much medicine will kill your Water Dragon. Do 100% water changes every day. You will need to match the temperature of the tank water; Lower water temperature is better that Higher water temperature. The best way to do this is to use an instant read thermometer. If the tap water will does not match the tank temperature, then you can use ice to match the water temperature in a New 5 gallon bucket. Leave the chlorine in your water because it will help stop infections. However, if your tap water is not safe to drink then it would not be safe for your Water Dragon. Only feed frozen Blood Worms or live food like Red Wiggle worms you can buy at Walmart or any Bait Store. After 24 hours remove any uneaten food from your tank, you can do this when you do your daily water change. The leg will grow back in about 8 to 10 weeks.

My Axolotl fell on the floor, what can I do?
There is not really that much you can do about it. If the Water Dragon has sustained serious injuries when fell to the floor it is likely that it has internal injuries and you need to wait to see if your Water Dragon can heal its injuries or not. The first thing you to do is to make a plastic stretcher to avoid any movement by you Water Dragon Then put your Water Dragon in a plastic shoe box that you can buy at the Dollar Store. Do 100% water changes every day. My Water Dragons do not move around is something wrong?
Water Dragons (axolotls) do not move around too much because they are cold blooded animals. Most of the time you will see them come to the surface to get a breath of air, Water Dragons are air breathers and have lungs like us.

My Water Dragon is swimming around really fast and then just hammering his heads onto the sides of the tank. Is this normal? This behavior is when a Water Dragon (Axolotl) is frightened. The best thing you can do from allowing your Water Dragon to injure itself is to turn off all lights or you can put 1 or 2 ice cube to tank to lower the tank temperature. Cautionary note please do not continue to use ice cubes or ice bottles in your tank because your Water Dragon can not handle the ups and downs in temperature. If you do; your Water Dragon will die.

My Water Dragon (axolotl) skin is peeling off – shedding off. What should I do?
This is normal for a Water Dragon (axolotl) peeling off – shedding off their skin. Put your Water Dragon in a 2 1/2 Gallon tank and do water changes every day. You need to maintain the best possible water quality; Cold Clean Water every day. Remove any uneaten food and waste after 12 hours so that your Water Dragon will not eat food that is contaminated with bacteria. During this time feed your Water Dragon (axolotl) frozen Blood Worms until the skin has peeled off – shed off is completely.

My Water Dragon is dying; can you please tell me how to stop the suffering?
There is a difference in cold blooded and warm blooded animals. A person in regular clothing immersed in water just above freezing will last only a few minutes. I am sure freezing to death is very painful way to die because we are warm blooded.  However Water Dragons can stay alive in water that has a temperature just above the freezing. I have seen no harm to these Water Dragon after the Water Dragon comes back normal a temperature. I really doubt that a Water Dragon will suffer if you need to euthanasia by using the freezing method, because a Water Dragon is a cold blooded animal. I know that a lot of people out there that will disagree with me. So I ask all the naysayers to do the test themselves and they see that No Harm will happen when the Water Dragon comes back to their normal temperature.
